The Bag Lady

Bags of Shame

Bags of Shame

HA! I surprised you. This isn’t the usual fun and happy picture I usually put in the key place. This horrible dump is illegal and disgusting. This is a pretty pasture just outside of our compound on the way to the nursery. All of the garbage is plastic bags. I hate them. So, what can one ex-pat do? On a recent trip to Pondicherry with Anamika, our group visited Auroville where I discovered a project called Small Steps. They’ve employed natural-disaster victims to make 10 million cloth bags! You can sponsor production of the bags, distribute bags, and use the bags for shopping. I was so entranced by the project, and so disgusted by the piles of yucky bags all over, I made a contribution and volunteered to distribute bags. I’ve also been talking myself blue in the face telling everyone about it and making them promise to carry a little bag all the time.

The bags are about the same size as a cell phone; easy to take with you wherever  you go.

Bags the size of a cell phone!

Here we are with the first shipment of 200 bags.

I asked for 1000 bags, but so far, only 200 have come.

To learn more about the project, visit this web site. They have bag distribution in many countries besides India, including the US.
